Why Lohne

Lohne is a German town situated in Lower Saxony's Vechta district, positioned roughly eight kilometers southwest of the city of Vechta. Located in the Oldenburg Münsterland region between Oldenburg to the north and Osnabrück to the south, the municipality sits directly on the Weser-Ems watershed. Its eastern territory features raised bogs such as the Großes Moor, Brägeler Moor, and the protected Südlohner Moor, while the western side borders lowlands and the Dammer Berge Geest. Small local streams, including the Hopener Mühlenbach, Bokerner Bach, and Dadau, drain the surrounding countryside into the Hase and Hunte river systems.

Historically recognized for its specialized economic landscape, Lohne developed diverse production facilities around 1900, including brush works, brickworks, peat processing, sausage production, and early injection moulding plants. Since the mid-twentieth century, plastics manufacturing has formed a central part of the local economy, alongside machinery construction, metalworking, packaging, cork processing, and agriculture. The town hosts the majority of the district's vocational institutions and holds regular weekly markets at the Alter Markt and Rixheimer Platz.

Visitors can explore a variety of historical buildings and cultural landmarks throughout the town. Notable architectural sights include the St. Gertrud Church with its prominent high altar, the St. Anna Klus pilgrimage chapel and its healing spring, the moated Castle Hopen, and the historical Pastoratsmühle watermill located in the city park. Additional sites include the Elbers Mühle windmill, an observation tower in the forest park, and several historic residences such as Villa Clodius and Haus Uptmoor. Cultural activities take place across venues like the Freilichtbühne open-air theater and local performance groups.

Public art is integrated throughout Lohne, partially developed through a sculptor symposium hosted in 1992. Notable installations include the bronze Gänseliesel sculpture, the EGOLOHNE 88 fountain, and the steel sculpture Jede Menge Leute, alongside more than one hundred historic wayside crosses scattered across the municipal area. The Lohne Museum of Industry offers exhibits detailing the area's commercial and manufacturing heritage.

Transportation to and within Lohne is facilitated by the A1 freeway, which connects the region to Bremen and Osnabrück via the Lohne/Dinklage exit. The town's railway station provides hourly passenger services on the Delmenhorst–Hesepe line, while regional buses and a local call-bus network connect Lohne to neighboring communities. International air travel is accessible through Bremen Airport and Münster Osnabrück Airport, both situated approximately 80 kilometers away.
