Why Sundern (Sauerland)
Sundern is a municipality situated in the Hochsauerland district within North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its name originates from a Westphalian dialect term referring to land designated for private use. Geographically, the town is located about ten kilometers southwest of Arnsberg and is partitioned into sixteen distinct local subdivisions, including Enkhausen.
The town's natural surroundings feature the Homert nature park, an expansive area that draws numerous leisure travelers, particularly visitors traveling from the Netherlands. Another prominent geographical feature is the Sorpesee, a man-made reservoir that serves as a hub for recreational activities such as fishing, camping, and various water sports.
Outdoor recreation continues into the colder months, with winter sports forming a significant part of the local tourism sector. The area of Wildewiese functions as the primary hub for snow sports, featuring dedicated facilities for skiing. Additionally, visitors to the region can access architectural viewpoints such as the Schomberg Observation Tower.
Sundern is the birthplace of former German President Heinrich Luebke, who was born in the village of Enkhausen and served as head of state from 1959 to 1969. The town also maintains international cultural links through municipal partnerships with Schirgiswalde in Germany, alongside Benet and Torfou in France.
In addition to its tourism appeal, the municipality maintains an active industrial sector. Sundern serves as an economic center for packaging businesses, household appliance manufacturing, and both residential and commercial lighting producers, housing the corporate headquarters of the appliance manufacturer SEVERIN Elektrogeräte GmbH.
