When you visit Malé in the Maldives, you can stop by the Aasahara Mosque, officially known as Masjid al-Ta'aawun. Located in the Machchangolhi neighborhood, this site serves as a Sunni Islam mosque and graveyard. While most of the history surrounding this location remains relatively unknown, it plays an essential role in the local community.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it stood out as one of only two mosques in Malé that held funeral prayers. Following a major renovation in 2024 funded by the Malé City Council's 'Chaalu Miskiy' fundraiser—which successfully collected Rf. 700,000—the site was updated and officially inaugurated by President Mohamed Muizzu.
As a visitor, you will see a modern, fully air-conditioned two-storey structure designed to serve the community comfortably. When exploring the renovated grounds, you can observe the purpose-built areas within the spacious Funeral House room, designated motorcycle parking, accessible toilets specifically designed for individuals with special needs, and gender-segregated facilities for children. Whether you are interested in modern Maldivian civic projects or local religious landmarks in Machchangolhi, visiting Aasahara Mosque offers you a unique look at a key functional space that continues to serve the residents of Malé.
