Welcome to the Malé Friday Mosque, also known as Malé Hukuru Miskiy, the oldest and most ornate mosque in the Maldives. Located in capital Malé opposite the Medhu Ziyaaraiy, this historic Sufi Sunni mosque was completed in 1658 under Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I. You will be amazed by its unique sea-culture architecture, constructed entirely from interlocking Porites coral boulders that hardened into sturdy building blocks. When you visit, you can admire extraordinary artistry created by local master carpenters and calligraphers.
Inside, you will see vaulted stepped ceilings, detailed Quranic inscriptions, and culturally significant traditional Maldivian woodcarvings and lacquerwork. Note how the prayer carpets are angled northwest towards Mecca inside the west-oriented structure. The mosque features three main prayer sections alongside a memorial 13th-century carved panel marking the introduction of Islam to the nation. Outside, you cannot miss the distinctive round blue-and-white minaret built in 1675, which strikingly resembles a layered wedding cake.
Surrounding the grounds is a 17th-century cemetery filled with intricately decorated coral tombstones and small family mausoleums. This continuous place of worship stands as a masterpiece of Maldivian heritage and creative achievement.
