Located on the eastern side of Boduthakurufaanu Magu near the Artificial Beach in Malé, the King Salman Mosque stands as one of the largest mosques in the Indian Ocean, capable of hosting up to 10,000 worshippers. Funded in part by Saudi Arabia and named after King Salman, this impressive six-storey Sunni Islam mosque was planned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Maldivian independence. As you explore the exterior, you will notice five distinct minarets surrounding the complex, which represent the five pillars of Islam.

Instead of featuring a traditional dome, the structure uniquely incorporates a dome-like design made to resemble a Bedouin desert tent rendered in the Maldivian vernacular roof style. Inside, the grand complex houses a library, an auditorium, classrooms, and a multi-purpose hall. Construction began in 2018, and although official opening delays occurred while funding was sought to address air conditioning issues, the mosque unofficially opened its doors for prayers in April 2022.

It offers travelers a fascinating look at modern Maldivian architecture and religious culture right in the heart of the capital city.
