Located north of Al-Buzuriyah Souq in the Ancient City of Damascus, Al-Azm Palace is a striking monument to 18th-century Arab architecture. Built in 1749 as a private residence for the governor As'ad Pasha al-Azm over the site of a former Mamluk palace, this historic estate today houses the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions. When you visit, you will encounter classic Damascene traditional design spanning three distinct wings: the harem (family quarters), selamlek (guest wing), and khademlek (servants' quarters).
As you explore its 6,400-square-meter footprint, look out for remarkable architectural details. The palace showcases ablaq masonry—alternating courses of white limestone and black basalt—alongside sandstone and marble. You can wander through reception halls, view painted wooden ceiling panels featuring natural scenes, and admire large courtyards featuring a traditional cascading fountain.
You will also discover private baths that replicate public city hammams on a smaller scale, with narrow corridors leading to a central steam room. Inside the museum, you can examine displays of traditional crafts including textiles, glassware, copper, and a collection of Syrian traditional costumes reproduced by artist Ziad Zukkari.
