Citadel of Damascus

Located in the northwest corner of the city walls between Bab al-Faradis and Bab al-Jabiyah, the Citadel of Damascus is a medieval Ayyubid-era fortified palace in Syria. As part of the Ancient City of Damascus—a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979—it invites you to explore centuries of intense Middle Eastern history. First fortified in 1076 by Turkman warlord Atsiz bin Uvak and completed by Seljuq ruler Tutush I, the complex was famously converted into a residence by Saladin and completely rebuilt by his brother Al-Adil between 1203 and 1216.

When you visit, you will observe a rectangular curtain wall measuring 230 by 150 meters, guarded by 12 remaining massive square towers originally designed to host counterweight trebuchets. Explore its northern, western, and eastern flanks to see the impressive gates and Ayyubid architecture, which cleverly incorporates older Seljuq elements. Over the centuries, the citadel endured Crusader sieges, Mongol bombardments, Mamluk and Ottoman restorations, and even 1925 shelling during the French Mandate.

Though it later served as Janissary barracks and a prison, modern restoration work ongoing since 1986 lets you appreciate this resilient stronghold.
