Perched high above Damascus on Mount Mezzeh, next to Mount Qasioun, the People's Palace—formerly known as the Presidential Palace—offers a striking look into Syria's political landscape and architectural scale. Covering a massive 31,500-square-meter main building within a 510,000-square-meter compound, this sprawling complex overlooks the entire city below. Designed by renowned Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, who reputedly resigned prior to its construction, the building presents what scholar Udo Kultermann characterized as feudalistic architecture.
As you explore the grounds, you will see a large fountain near the main facade and admire the intricate brass front gates crafted by Syrian metalwork artist Maurice Nseiri. Inside, the palace largely consists of vast, empty rooms clad in brilliant Carrara marble. Historically used by Hafez al-Assad for international summits, such as his 1994 meeting with US President Bill Clinton, the site marked a major historical turning point when opposition forces entered on December 8, 2024.
Today, it hosts critical diplomatic functions and political conferences for Syria's transitional government, making it an extraordinary point of interest for travelers fascinated by history in the making.
