Alsdorf is a municipality located in western Germany within the Aachen district of North Rhine-Westphalia. Positioned near the tri-border region shared by Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, it borders several communes including Baesweiler, Aldenhoven, Eschweiler, Würselen, Herzogenrath, and Übach-Palenberg. The local geography is marked by various streams—including the Begauer, Broicher, Hoengener, Merz, Schaufenberger, and Euchener streams, along with the Siefengraben—as well as the Alsdorf and Mariadorf ponds.
The area encompasses historical settlements dating to medieval times alongside communities established during its industrial expansion. First recorded in a Catholic Church document in 1191, Alsdorf historically saw its territory divided among the Duchies of Limburg, Brabant, and Jülich. Over the centuries, jurisdiction passed through the Duchy of Burgundy, the Spanish and Austrian Habsburg realms, and French governance, before being assigned to Prussia following the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
Historically an agricultural region, Alsdorf underwent rapid development following the arrival of coal mining in the mid-19th century. Production commenced at the Maria Mine in 1849 and the Anna Mine in 1853, prompting extensive residential construction to house an expanding workforce and resulting in the formation of numerous outlying districts. Coal extraction remained central to the local economy until the final mine closed in 1992, after which the municipality transitioned into a location for service companies and modern business parks.

Key points of interest include the historic Alsdorf Castle, Ottenfeld Castle, a mining museum, a local zoo, an indoor arena, and a cinema set within a converted water tower. Architectural features across the town's seventeen districts include the water tower of Mine Anna, the Kellersberger and Broicher mills, the Blumenrath estate, and the Church of St. Mariae Empfängnis in Mariadorf.
