Why Arnstadt
Arnstadt is a historic town of roughly 27,000 residents situated in the Ilm-Kreis district of Thuringia, Germany. Positioned along the west bank of the River Gera, it lies approximately 20 kilometers south of Erfurt, the regional capital. Because of its location on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest, the town is known as the gateway to that region. Over time, the municipality has incorporated several neighboring communities, including Angelhausen–Oberndorf, Siegelbach, Rudisleben, and Wipfratal.
Recognized as one of Thuringia's oldest documented settlements, Arnstadt was first mentioned in a 704 deed under the name Arnestati. During the Middle Ages, ownership passed between religious institutions and noble houses, including the Abbeys of Echternach and Hersfeld, as well as the Counts of Kevernburg and Schwarzburg. Chartered in 1266, Arnstadt developed into a thriving market center trading in timber, grain, wool, wine, woad, and vegetables, supported by local milling, tanning, and cloth-making industries. The sixteenth century brought the introduction of the Reformation and the construction of Neideck Castle, a water palace. Today, Arnstadt maintains a manufacturing base that includes glassworks, foundries, solar panel production, glove manufacturing, and wood finishing.
The town features a preserved, pedestrianized historical center framed by sections of its former town wall. Notable architectural landmarks include the Liebfrauenkirche, a Romanesque-Gothic church dating from the thirteenth century, an eighteenth-century palace, and the Oberkirche, a former Franciscan monastery church secularized during the Reformation. The town center also claims the historic origin of German bratwurst, citing a local document from 1404.
Arnstadt is deeply tied to musical history through composer Johann Sebastian Bach, whose family lived in the area for generations. In 1703, an eighteen-year-old Bach took his first official position as organist at the New Church, which has since been renamed the Bach Church. Playing a modern instrument crafted by organ builder Johann Friedrich Wender, Bach developed his keyboard techniques and compositions here until 1707.
In addition to its historic sights, Arnstadt hosts Hochsprung mit Musik, an annual indoor high-jumping event held at the Sporthalle am Jahn-sportpark that draws international competitors. For visiting practicalities, the local climate receives an average annual precipitation of 487 millimeters.
