Why Bünde
Bünde is a town located in the Herford district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Positioned between Osnabrück to the west, Hanover to the east, and Bielefeld to the south, the municipality is divided into 12 distinct districts. The town is geographically defined by the River Else, which flows through the area from west to east. Uniquely formed by bifurcation rather than a natural spring, the river drains the region into the North Sea via the Werre and Weser rivers, receiving water from several local tributaries such as the Gewinghauser Bach, Ahler Bruchbach, Darmühlenbach, Spradower Mühlenbach, Eselsbach, and Werfener Bach.
Historical records first mention the settlement under the name Buginithi in 853. Bünde features one of Westphalia's oldest religious foundations, the Laurentius Church, which was established between 778 and 840. Local tradition attributes the town's name, meaning league or covenant, to the Saxon princes Hengist and Horsa, who are depicted on the municipal coat of arms shaking hands to seal their alliance. In more recent history, the town served as a British military base during the Cold War until the site closed in 1993.
Natural history forms a significant aspect of the region's heritage due to the nearby Doberg geological site. Excavations conducted in 1911 and 1912 by Friedrich Langewiesche uncovered 30-million-year-old fossils, including the skeleton of a manatee and the skull of a toothed whale. Today, these ancient discoveries are preserved and exhibited for visitors at the town's Doberg Museum.
Economically, Bünde is widely recognized for its manufacturing heritage, particularly in kitchen furniture and tobacco products. Earned the nickname the Cigar Box of Germany, it is a center for the Westphalian tobacco industry, producing cigars, pipes, and tobacco jars, while also housing dedicated tobacco museums. Additionally, the town has served as the European headquarters for the model maker Revell since 1957. Cultural life in Bünde includes regular symphony performances supported through its backing of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie.
