Chamberlain Bridge

When you visit Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, walking across the historic Chamberlain Bridge offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's past and present. Spanning the Careenage (Constitution River) near Carlisle Bay, this decorative humpbacked structure connects National Heroes Square to the opposite bank. Originally the site of an ancient wooden bridge built by indigenous Arawaks—which gave Bridgetown its name—the crossing has a rich history of reconstructions following floods, fires, and hurricanes.

Today, you can stroll across a modern, pedestrian-only lifting bridge constructed in 2005–2006. Built with state-of-the-art fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) and featuring an all-composite single-leaf bascule design, the bridge counterweights and pivots upward to allow pleasure craft, yachts, and catamarans to enter the inner basin. As you cross, you will see how it adjoins refurbished 1861 coral stone masonry arches, blending cutting-edge engineering with classic Barbadian architecture.

At the southern end, admire the 1987 Independence Commemorative Arch, read the plaque featuring the Barbadian National Anthem, or follow the attached boardwalk along the wharf to take in fine vistas of the town's lively waterfront.
