Jama Mosque

Located in Bridgetown, Barbados, the Jama Mosque (also known as Jumma Mosque) is a significant religious site and holds the distinction of being the largest mosque in the country. The mosque stands on a 622-square-metre (6,700 sq ft) site purchased by the local community in 1949.

Constructed by Mohammad Yusuf Degia, it officially opened its doors on January 26, 1951. To accommodate a growing community, the structure underwent a major renovation and expansion in the mid-1980s, which was completed in the late 1980s. As a result, its capacity increased dramatically from the original 95 worshippers to now accommodating up to 528 worshippers.

When you visit, you will notice that the mosque was built using local coral stones paired with decorative blocks featuring a striking star-shaped design. Another standout architectural feature to look for during your visit is the building's vibrant green glass windows, which were specially brought in from Germany. It offers a fascinating glance at local craftsmanship blended with international elements right in the heart of Bridgetown.
