Located on National Unity Square along Rozhdestvenskaya Street, the Church of St. John the Baptist is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Nizhny Novgorod. You will be stepping onto ground deeply tied to Russian history: it was mentioned as a wooden church as early as the 15th century, and from its porch in 1612, Kuzma Minin famously called upon citizens to liberate Moscow during the Time of Troubles.
The nearest Kremlin tower, Ivanovskaya tower, even took its name from this historic temple. A stone church was later consecrated in 1683, commissioned by merchant Gavriil Dranishnikov and completed by his brother Lavrentiy with a chapel honoring the martyress Anna. Over the centuries, the church faced erosion from underground springs, rebuilt altars, and a 1870 bell tower reconstruction.
Closed in 1937 and used as a motorcycle school during the Soviet era, services resumed in 1994, leading to a major restoration and a reconsecration on November 4, 2005. Today, when you visit, you can admire its restored domes, crosses, 19th-century zero-level marks, concrete retaining wall, and the Orthodox Rood screen hall operating inside since 2009.
