When you visit the historic Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, you will encounter the impressive Dmitrievskaya Tower standing proudly along the southern wall, overlooking Minin and Pozharsky Square. As the stronghold's main tower, it carries a fascinating past named either after Prince Dmitry of Suzdal or a nearby historic church dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. First mentioned in chronicles in 1516 after its construction began in 1500, this imposing structure has transformed dramatically over the centuries.
You can admire its distinctive architecture, shaped by extensive 18th-century modifications and architect Nikolai Sultanov's major 1890s redesign. Sultanov completely rebuilt the upper level in a West-European style, adding large decorative windows to house an art and historical museum that opened in 1896 with Emperor Nicholas II in attendance. While exploring the tower's exterior, look above the main entrance gate to see the beautifully restored icon of Yuri II of Vladimir, which was installed in 1994.
Although it once served as a garrison school, an archival depository, and a royal museum before its exhibits were moved in 1919, today it remains an essential piece of Russian fortress heritage that you cannot miss.
