Why Nizhny Novgorod
Nizhny Novgorod, situated 420 kilometers east of Moscow at the junction of the Oka and Volga rivers, is the administrative center of both its surrounding oblast and the Volga Federal District. As Russia's sixth-largest city, it serves as a central hub for river-based tourism along the Volga. The Oka River divides the landscape into two distinct areas: the elevated Upper City on the hilly eastern bank and the flatter Lower City to the west.
Established in 1221 by Prince George II of Vladimir as a wooden fort, the settlement grew into a crucial defensive stronghold. In 1612, local organizer Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky gathered a national militia here that successfully expelled foreign forces from Moscow. Commercial prominence expanded significantly in 1817 with the relocation of a massive trade fair to the city. Between 1932 and 1990, the municipality was renamed Gorky in honor of writer Maxim Gorky, during which time it transformed into a heavy industrial manufacturing center and remained restricted from foreign visitors.
The historical heart of the city resides within the Upper City at the Kremlin, an impressive red-brick fortress constructed between 1508 and 1511 that now houses regional government bodies. Directly outside the fortress lies Minin Square, while nearby St John the Baptist Church features a monument honoring the 1612 militia organizers. Visitors interested in literary heritage can explore the Kashirin House, the preserved childhood residence of Maxim Gorky. Across the river in the Lower City, the historic fair district and the main railway terminal reflect the city's commercial expansion.
Nizhny Novgorod experiences a humid continental climate featuring warm summers and long, snow-covered winters lasting from late November through late March. Average temperatures typically peak around 19 degrees Celsius in July and drop to minus 9 degrees Celsius in January. The city is reachable by rail networks and features an underground metro system that opened in 1985.
