Why Daejeon

Daejeon is South Korea's fifth-largest metropolis, home to over 1.5 million residents. Positioned in a central lowland valley bounded by small mountains, the city sits between the Sobaek Mountains and the Geum River, roughly 170 kilometers south of Seoul and 290 kilometers north of Busan. Three main rivers course through the city, eventually draining into the Yellow Sea via the Geum River. The region experiences a monsoon-influenced climate with four distinct seasons, characterized by hot, wet summers and colder, drier winter months.

The name Daejeon derives from the native Korean place name Hanbat, which translates to "great fields," a term documented as early as the 15th century. Archaeological finds at sites such as Yongho-dong and nearby Seokjang-ri reveal human presence stretching back to the Paleolithic era and Bronze Age. Throughout its history, the area formed part of the Mahan confederacy and the Baekje kingdom, serving as a strategic frontline during the Three Kingdoms period. The territory features various historic mountain fortresses, including Gyejoksanseong and Usul-fortress, before developing into a prominent transport junction following the establishment of the Gyeongbu Line railway and Daejeon Station in the early 1900s.

In modern times, Daejeon stands as a prominent administrative and technological center. It shares national administrative functions with Seoul, Gwacheon, and Sejong City, housing numerous government offices within its central Government Complex. Divided administratively into five districts, the metropolis includes Dunsan-dong, where city hall is situated, alongside historical neighborhoods like Songchon-dong, connected to Joseon-era scholar Song Si-yeol. The historical Hanbat name persists across local landmarks, including Hanbat-daero road, Hanbat National University, and Hanbat Baseball Stadium.

Daejeon is widely recognized for its scientific and educational institutions, hosting 23 colleges and universities, including the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Chungnam National University. Its Daedeok Innopolis district serves as a research hub containing government institutes as well as development facilities for major corporations like Samsung and LG. Over the years, the city has hosted significant international gatherings, including sub-events for the 1986 Asian Games, Expo '93, and the 2000 International Mathematical Olympiad, and is designated as the main host for the 2027 Summer World University Games.

As a central transportation hub, Daejeon offers convenient connectivity across South Korea. High-speed rail services such as the KTX and SRT link the city directly to Seoul, enabling a transit time of approximately 50 minutes.
