Why Giessen
Giessen is a German university town located in the state of Hesse, situated roughly 50 kilometres north of Frankfurt am Main. Functioning as the administrative centre for both its district and region, the town spans both sides of the Lahn River, which divides its eastern and western sectors. Its history and geography are closely connected to water, with the early name Giezzen—first documented in 1197—reflecting a position set among numerous local streams, lakes, and waterways.
The settlement's roots trace back to a moated fortress erected in 1152 by Count Wilhelm von Gleiberg, though the surrounding area includes districts like Wieseck that date back to 775. Over the centuries, control shifted through various territories, including Hesse-Marburg and Hesse-Darmstadt, before joining the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1806. World War II severely impacted the town when air raids in 1944 destroyed approximately three-quarters of its structures, including most historic sites. Following the war, a substantial United States Army presence remained in the area operating major supply facilities until all installations were returned to local German control in 2007.
Today, Giessen is defined by its vibrant academic identity, hosting roughly 37,000 students within a general population of around 90,000. It features the University of Giessen, which was established in 1607. Visitors can explore the Botanischer Garten Gießen, created in 1609 as the oldest botanical garden in Germany still residing on its original site, alongside the nearby Akademischer Forstgarten. Scientific heritage is further showcased at the Liebig-Museum, dedicated to chemist Justus von Liebig, and the Mathematikum, an interactive museum offering hands-on mathematical displays.
Additional points of interest include the Old Cemetery, or Alter Friedhof, where pioneering physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen is buried. Cultural venues like the Keller Theatre occupy uniquely repurposed space, originally serving as a German army officers' club before its time under American administration. Local residential quarters along the Lahn, such as Rubber Island, reflect the town's unique character, which historically included the rare Manisch dialect spoken in specific lower-income neighborhoods.
For sports enthusiasts, the town supports the Giessen 46ers, a five-time national championship basketball team that competes at the Sporthalle Gießen-Ost, as well as the Giessen Golden Dragons American football club. Geographically, the area experiences a marine west coast climate characterized by mild differences between high and low temperatures and consistent rainfall throughout the year.
