Why Griesheim
Griesheim is the largest town in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of southern Hesse, Germany, home to more than 28,000 residents. Situated within the flat landscape of the Hessian Ried, the community lies between the Darmstadt Westwald forest area to the east and the historical course of the Urneckar to the west. Much of the surrounding terrain is heavily used for agriculture. The town borders Darmstadt directly to the west, placing it close to the Darmstädter Kreuz highway interchange where the A5 and A67 autobahns intersect.
Human habitation in the area dates back to approximately 4500 BCE, though written records first mentioned Griesheim in 1165 CE. The community adopted the Protestant Reformation in 1529, and viticulture historically served as a vital part of the local economy. The town suffered extreme hardship during the Thirty Years' War, forcing many residents to seek shelter in neighboring Darmstadt, where they suffered through a outbreak of plague. By the end of the conflict in 1648, only 37 survivors remained to rebuild the community.
In subsequent centuries, Griesheim became tied to aviation and military developments. An artillery range was established in the southwest in 1874, and in 1908, August Euler founded Germany's first airfield, known as Griesheim Airport. Following French occupation between 1918 and 1930, World War II brought heavy destruction, leaving nearly two-thirds of the town's buildings destroyed. Rebuilt after housing approximately 4,000 post-war refugees, Griesheim was officially granted township rights in 1965. In 2013, global attention again turned to the municipality regarding disclosures about the Dagger Complex, a major European intelligence headquarters located there.
Visitors to Griesheim can learn about regional heritage at the local history and culture museum, which displays archaeological items alongside exhibits detailing the town's historical link to St. Stephen. Known regionally as "Onion City," the town features a Zwiebelfrau (Onion Woman) statue in its central market square. Every year in late September since 1977, the city hosts the Griesheimer Zwiebelmarkt, an annual market festival situated between Hans-Karl-Platz and the Wagenhalle in the city center.
Reaching Griesheim is straightforward thanks to direct regional transport links. The B26 highway runs east-west directly through the municipality, while Darmstadt tram lines 4, 9, and 10 connect Griesheim to central Darmstadt. Local bus lines also offer service to nearby destinations such as Riedstadt, Groß-Gerau, and Trebur. In addition, Griesheim maintains official twin-city partnerships with towns in France, Hungary, and Italy, as well as a town friendship with Wilkau-Haßlau in Germany.
