Why Kaufbeuren
Kaufbeuren is an independent town situated in the Swabia region of Bavaria, Germany. Geographic features of the municipality include its position as an enclave enclosed within the surrounding district of Ostallgäu. The municipality encompasses nine distinct districts, ranging from its historical core to surrounding communities such as Oberbeuren, Hirschzell, Kleinkemnat, Großkemnat, Märzisried, Ölmühlhang, Sankt Cosmas, and Neugablonz, the latter of which was constructed to house displaced populations following World War II.
The town retains a rich heritage reflected in its architectural landmarks and historic structures. Visitors exploring the historical center can view partially preserved town walls along with several historic towers, including the Fünfknopfturm, Hexenturm, Gerberturm, Pulverturm, Münzturm, and Sywollenturm. Prominent religious sites feature the Crescentiakloster, a convent established in 1150, alongside St.-Martins-Kirche and St.-Blasius-Kirche. Other notable buildings across the town include the late nineteenth-century town hall and the historic Zollhäuschen.
Cultural and educational institutions offer diverse experiences throughout the city. Art and historical exhibits are available at the Kunsthaus Kaufbeuren, the Stadtmuseum, the Feuerwehrmuseum, and the Puppentheater-Museum. Additionally, the district of Neugablonz houses the Isergebirgs-Museum. Performing arts are represented locally at the Stadttheater Kaufbeuren, while annual traditions include the Tänzelfest, a festival held toward the end of June where local children dress in historic costumes to re-enact local history.
Kaufbeuren provides facilities for both sports and military aviation history. The town is recognized for its sports culture, featuring the soccer team of the Bezirksliga South and the ESV Kaufbeuren ice hockey team, which competes in Germany's DEL2 division. Outside the town center lies the Kaufbeuren Air Base, originally constructed as a Luftwaffe installation in 1935, which later served as a U.S. military base following World War II before being returned for use as a training station for the German Air Force.
