Kesik Minare 🇹🇷

When you walk along Kaleiçi Hesapçi Street in Old Antalya, southern Turkey, you will discover the Kesik Minare Cami, also referred to as the Broken Minaret Mosque, Korkut Cami, or Cumanın Cami. You should visit this remarkable location because its walls showcase nearly two millennia of religious transformation. Originally built as a 2nd-century Roman temple, the structure was converted into a Byzantine church honoring the Virgin Mary during the 7th century.

Despite heavy damage from 7th-century Arab invasions, workers repaired it in the 9th century. When the Sultanate of Rum established rule in the early 13th century, they added a minaret and made it a mosque. Later, in 1361, the crusader king of Cyprus turned it back into a church, until Ottoman rule under Şehzade Korkut, son of Sultan Bayezid II, restored its mosque status.

After a fire destroyed the main building in 1896, the iconic minaret remained. Following restoration starting in 2018, which rebuilt the top cone and roof, the building officially reopened as an active mosque on March 5, 2021. Today, you can marvel at a site welcoming worshippers for the first time in nearly 125 years.
