Why Königsbrunn

Königsbrunn is a town located in Bavaria, Germany, within the district of Augsburg. Situated roughly ten kilometers south of Augsburg, the settlement lies on the left bank of the Lech river. It holds the distinction of being the most populous municipality in its district, recording a population of 28,377 residents in 2023.

Historical records highlight Königsbrunn as one of Bavaria's younger communities. Its origins trace back to 1688, when a bishop established a custom house known as the Neuhaus at an intersection along the ancient Via Claudia. This structure remains the oldest surviving building within the settlement. Königsbrunn officially achieved independent status as a commune in 1842 and was later granted municipal rights in 1967, precisely 125 years after its formation.

Among the town's key points of interest is the Mercateum. This landmark features the largest globe in the world designed after a historical map, offering a unique geographical reference for visitors exploring local attractions.

The town maintains international cultural ties as a sister city to Rab, Croatia. Emergency services and public safety infrastructure serve the municipality and surrounding transit corridors, including the four-lane B17 highway, with fire response operated locally from a station on St.-Johannes-Straße.
