Lal Masjid

When you visit Islamabad, you can explore Lal Masjid, officially known as Markazi Jāmi Masjid Islamabad. Constructed in 1966 after President Ayub Khan laid its foundation stone in 1964, it is one of the capital's oldest congregational mosques. Designed by architect Zaheer ud Deen Khawaja, the structure blends Ottoman and Mughal architectural styles, drawing inspiration from the Jama Mosque, Badshahi Mosque, and Istanbul’s Süleymaniye Mosque.

Originally built with yellow bricks that degraded, the mosque gained its famous moniker, "Lal Masjid" or Red Mosque, when a contractor applied cement and red paint to preserve the building. Situated in a central position close to the busy Aabpara and Melody Markets, as well as the Presidential Palace, the mosque holds a prominent place in local history. Over the decades, it welcomed foreign dignitaries and foreign tourists, while also serving as a focal point for major political movements, a 2007 military siege, and subsequent restorations.

During visits today, you can admire its restored exterior adorned with sandstone, intricate mosaics, and detailed calligraphy, alongside an interior main hall enhanced with rich wood paneling. It offers you a direct look into Pakistan's complex modern heritage.
