Why Ludwigsfelde

Ludwigsfelde is a municipality located in the northern portion of the Teltow-Fläming district within the state of Brandenburg, Germany. Positioned just south of Berlin on the Teltow plateau, the area previously belonged to the Zossen district. Today, the town encompasses the central urban area alongside numerous surrounding villages integrated between 1997 and 2003, including Ahrensdorf, Genshagen, Gröben, Groß Schulzendorf, Jütchendorf, Kerzendorf, Löwenbruch, Mietgendorf, Schiaß, Siethen, and Wietstock.

While several outlying villages date back to the twelfth century—such as Gröben, recorded around 1170—the primary settlement of Ludwigsfelde was established in 1750 under King Frederick II of Prussia. The community officially received its town classification in 1965, coinciding with a period of major industrial expansion.

Visitors exploring the area will find historical sites such as Genshagen Palace in the village of Genshagen. The town also features a diverse sporting background. It maintains a partnership with the Berlin football club Hertha BSC, while local teams such as the Ludwigsfelder Football Club and the Ludwigsfelder Handball Club have competed in regional leagues. The municipality has produced national champions in cycle ball and model gliding, and it served as a venue for a marathon during the 2005 European Speed Skating Championships.

Ludwigsfelde has a long history as a manufacturing hub. Industrial development began in 1936 with a Daimler-Benz engine factory, which was dismantled after World War II. Reestablished in 1952, the local plant manufactured heavy machinery, commercial vehicles, motor scooters such as the SR 59 Berlin, and airliner engines. By 1965, the facility expanded into the largest production complex in the region, focusing on IFA trucks. Following political and economic shifts in the 1990s, Daimler-Benz reassumed control of the facilities, transitioning production to modern commercial vehicles including Mercedes-Benz vans and components for Volkswagen. Other notable modern industries include MTU Aero Engines maintenance facilities and a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant.
