Why Memmingen

Memmingen is a historic town situated in the Swabia region of Bavaria, Germany, along the Iller River near the Baden-Württemberg border. Located approximately 50 kilometers south of Ulm and 100 kilometers west of Munich, it functions as a central hub for the surrounding area. Frequently referred to as the Gateway to the Allgäu, the town lies adjacent to the scenic Unterallgäu district and serves as an administrative and economic center.

Origins of the settlement trace back to the Roman period, later developing into a prominent trading hub along the salt road leading to Lindau. Granted the status of an Imperial City in 1286, Memmingen played a significant role in European history. In 1525, it was the site where the Twelve Articles were drafted, widely recognized as the earliest written declaration of human rights in Europe. The town was also a key location during the Protestant Reformation and the Thirty Years' War.

Memmingen features one of the most remarkably preserved medieval old towns in southern Germany. Its historic core is encircled by roughly two kilometers of original town walls incorporating ten gates and towers, with former defensive ditches now transformed into public parklands. The central market square is flanked by a Renaissance town hall, the Großzunft guildhouse, and the painted Steuerhaus. Other notable structures include the Gothic St. Martin's Church, the frescoed Frauenkirche, the Seven Roof House, and the historic Antoniterkloster monastery complex.

Cultural experiences in the town include visits to the Town Museum housed in the Hermannsbau, which displays exhibits on local history and the former Jewish community, as well as the MEWO-Kunsthalle gallery focusing on contemporary artwork. Memmingen hosts well-known traditions, including the annual Fisherman's Day (Fischertag) and the Wallensteinfestspiel, a massive historical reenactment held every four years to commemorate military events from 1630.

As a regional transport junction, Memmingen is easily reached via the A7 and A96 motorways. The local railway station offers direct connections to destinations such as Munich, Lindau, Ulm, and Oberstdorf, while Memmingen Airport connects the town to various European flight routes.
