Why Mobile

Mobile, located in southwestern Alabama, is the county seat of Mobile County and the second-most populous city in the state. Situated along the north-central Gulf Coast at the head of Mobile Bay where the Mobile River enters, the city hosts Alabama's only deep-water port. The surrounding metropolitan region is home to over 400,000 residents, anchored by a maritime economy centered on a facility recognized as the twelfth-largest port in the United States.

Regarded as a key cultural center of the Gulf Coast region, Mobile features a broad array of cultural attractions, including multiple art museums, a symphony orchestra, a professional opera, a ballet company, and a dense concentration of historic architecture. The city is especially renowned as the site of the oldest organized Mardi Gras festivities in the nation. Originally celebrated by the area's French Creole population in the early eighteenth century, Mobile became home to the first organized Carnival mystic society to present a public parade in 1830.

The city takes its name from the indigenous Mobile tribe, who partnered with early French colonists to select a strategic settlement location along the river. Established in 1702 by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, Mobile served as the initial capital of French Louisiana. The settlement was moved downriver to its current location in 1711 due to flooding and disease. Over the subsequent decades, sovereignty transferred to Great Britain in 1763 and Spain in 1780, before the area was ultimately seized by the United States in 1813.

Throughout the nineteenth century, Mobile grew into a major maritime trade hub, utilizing steamboats along its extensive river network to transport cotton to global markets. During the American Civil War, the strategic location functioned as a Confederate stronghold until its surrender to Union forces in April 1865 following military actions in the bay and surrounding forts. In the twentieth century, harbor expansions and heavy manufacturing boosted the local economy, establishing Mobile as a prominent shipbuilding center that produced numerous Liberty ships and naval vessels during World War II.
