Why Mühlheim am Main

Mühlheim am Main is a town of roughly 28,500 inhabitants located along the left bank of the Main River in the Offenbach district of Hesse, Germany. Situated within the historic Maingau area of the Frankfurt Rhine Main Region, the municipality lies between Offenbach am Main to the west and Hanau to the east. Covering an area of 20.67 square kilometers, its geography is shaped by the Bieber River joining the Rodau, which then flows into the Main. The municipality comprises the main town—which includes an Old Town, an inner core, and the Markwald and Rote Warte residential districts—alongside the outlying communities of Dietesheim and Lämmerspiel.

The town's recorded history began in 815 when Emperor Louis the Pious granted Untermühlheim to Einhard. The name Mühlheim derives from ten historic watermills that once lined the Bieber and Rodau brooks, of which only the Brückenmühle survives today, opening to visitors annually on Whit Monday. During the Middle Ages, Mühlheim operated as a regional Mother Church and spiritual court under the authority of the Lords of Hagenhausen-Eppstein, before being sold to the Electorate of Mainz in 1435 and eventually passing to Hesse. Historically associated with the Biebermark communal territory and the royal hunting forest of Wildbann Dreieich, Mühlheim gained rail access in 1873, received town rights upon merging with Dietesheim in 1939, and incorporated Lämmerspiel in 1977.

Local landmarks include a functional basalt water tower situated near the railway station and the town museum. Visitors can also arrange viewings of a private Rolls-Royce collection in exchange for charitable donations. Natural features are highlighted by the Dietesheimer Steinbrüche, a renaturalized conservation area set in former basalt quarries that features striking basalt cliffs around the Vogelsberger See. Cultural venues include the long-running travesti theater Gerda's kleine Weltbühne and the SCHANZ cultural hall, housed in a former workshop.

Community life features annual Shrovetide parades during Fasching across the constituent districts, the late-July Steinbruchfestival music event in the quarries, an Old Town Festival, a Christmas Market, and the Dietesheim kermis. Recreational options encompass rowing on the Main, target shooting, indoor and outdoor swimming in Lämmerspiel, and facilities for football, tennis, and table tennis.

Once a major industrial hub focused on basalt quarrying, rubber processing, chemicals, and leatherworking, Mühlheim's economy is now characterized primarily by medium-sized enterprises. Travel to and within the area relies on Bundesstraße 43 as well as local bus routes. Public rail transport is provided by two Rhine-Main S-Bahn stations served by lines S8 and S9, granting direct access to downtown Offenbach, central Frankfurt, and Frankfurt Airport.
