Why Nanchang
Nanchang serves as the provincial capital of Jiangxi in inland southeastern China. Situated in the hinterland of the Poyang Lake Plain, the city is built on the right bank of the Gan River, slightly downstream from its confluence with the Jin River. Bounded on the west by the Jiuling Mountains and located roughly 40 kilometers southwest of Poyang Lake, Nanchang occupies a strategic geographic position approximately 130 kilometers south of the Yangtze River, making it an essential transportation link between eastern and southern China.
The region was first annexed into China during the Qin Dynasty and received the name Nanchang in 201 BC under the Han Dynasty, when General Guan Ying established it as the seat of Yuzhang Commandery. The name translates to "southern flourishing." Renamed Hongzhou during the Sui Dynasty and later Longxing, the settlement steadily grew into a populous regional center. In modern history, the city gained distinction for the August 1, 1927 Nanchang Uprising, an event recognized as the origin of the People's Liberation Army. It was also the site of the Battle of Nanchang during World War II in 1939.
A primary landmark in Nanchang is the Tengwang Pavilion, erected on the riverbank in 653. The site achieved lasting literary fame in 675 when Wang Bo composed his famous prose masterpiece celebrating the building. Destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly throughout history—most recently following its destruction in 1929—the current structure was reconstructed in the 1980s. Nanchang also maintains historical ties to the regional porcelain trade and housed members of the imperial family during the Ming Dynasty.
Since 1949, Nanchang has expanded into a large industrial and commercial metropolis. Key economic sectors include aircraft assembly, automotive manufacturing, chemical production, metallurgy, cotton textiles, and traditional Chinese medicine, alongside food processing and paper production. The city contains specialized industrial districts, such as the Nanchang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, and hosts Nanchang University, contributing to its standing in scientific research outputs.
Nanchang is a central regional rail and aviation hub. The city is served by major passenger rail terminals, including Nanchang Station and Nanchang West Railway Station, providing high-speed service to hubs such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Changsha. Air transportation is provided by Nanchang Changbei International Airport, located 26 kilometers north of the central city area.
The city features a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are brief and cool with occasional frost. Spring brings significant rain, particularly from April through June. Summers are long, humid, and warm, representing the sunniest period of the year, while autumn brings mild temperatures and the lowest annual rainfall levels.
