Why Reinbek
Reinbek is a town situated in the Stormarn district of Schleswig-Holstein, a northern state in Germany. Positioned within the greater Hamburg metropolitan region, the settlement lies along the River Bille. The river is impounded locally to form a mill pond, providing a distinctive natural feature for the area.
Historical records first document the town in 1226, with its name likely deriving from a phrase meaning a brook at the field margin. Following centuries of growth, Reinbek was officially granted city rights in 1952. The local population represents a mix of religious backgrounds, including Protestant, Catholic, and other faiths, alongside a notable portion of residents without a religious affiliation.
Among the town's primary landmarks is Schloss Reinbek, a 16th-century castle designed in the Dutch Renaissance architectural style. Originally constructed for Duke Adolf I of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, the building now functions as a regional center for art and culture. The area is also home to several notable places of worship, such as the Lutheran Church of Mary Magdalene, the Nathan-Söderblom Church, and the Roman Catholic Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, among others.
Reinbek maintains international municipal ties, including an official partnership with Koło, Poland, established in 1999. It has also maintained ongoing cooperation with Padasjoki in Finland since 1974 and holds friendly relations with Täby in Sweden.

Regional public transportation is integrated into the Hamburg transit network, featuring local bus routes and service via the S2 line of the Hamburg S-Bahn at Reinbek station.
