Why Sapporo

Sapporo is the capital city of Hokkaido Prefecture and the Ishikari Subprefecture in northern Japan. Located in the southwestern region of the Ishikari Plain on the alluvial fan of the Toyohira River, it stands as the fifth-most populous city in the nation and the largest city north of Tokyo. Serving as Hokkaido's primary political, economic, and cultural hub, the municipality covers an expanse of over 1,120 square kilometers and is divided into ten administrative wards.

The regional landscape features flat terrain framed by notable summits to the west and south, including Mount Teine, Maruyama, and Mount Moiwa. Waterways such as the Toyohira, Ishikari, and Sosei rivers flow through the area. Sapporo experiences a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, exceptionally snowy winters, receiving an annual average of nearly 4.8 meters of snow. This substantial snowfall is driven by weather systems moving cold air across the Tsushima Current from Eurasia toward western Hokkaido.

Originally inhabited by the indigenous Ainu people and home to trading posts during the Edo period, the location was selected in the late 1860s to serve as a new administrative center for Hokkaido due to its open terrain. Built on a grid system inspired by ancient Japanese capitals, the city expanded rapidly, incorporating surrounding villages over the decades. American advisors contributed to early local agricultural and educational developments in the 1870s. Sapporo officially transitioned to a city system in 1922 and became Hokkaido's main commercial center following World War II.

Tourism and winter recreation form a major component of the local economy alongside information technology, retail, and manufacturing sectors such as food, beverages, metal, and paper products. The city hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics—the first held in Asia—along with matches for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Its most famous annual event is the Sapporo Snow Festival, which attracts millions of visitors to view massive snow sculptures.

Notable sights include Odori Park, a broad green space stretching through the city center, which houses the Sapporo TV Tower and hosts major festivals. Other points of interest include the historical Red-Brick Hokkaido Government Office Building, Hokkaido Shrine, the historical Hoheikan structure in Nakajima Park, Moerenuma Park, and the Sapporo Beer Museum. Academic life centers around Hokkaido University, situated just north of Sapporo Station. Public transit includes a streetcar, bus lines, and a rubber-tired municipal subway system. Travel to and from the city is facilitated by Okadama Airport for regional routes, while New Chitose Airport in nearby Chitose provides broader national and international air connections, linked to the capital by rapid rail.
