Why Schwerin

Schwerin is the capital of the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the second-largest city in the region after Rostock. Holding the distinction of being Germany's least populous state capital, the city is situated along the southwestern shores of Lake Schwerin within the Mecklenburg Lake Plateau. Twelve lakes lie within the municipality's borders, and the surrounding countryside connects the location to the eastern edges of the broader Hamburg Metropolitan Region.

With a heritage dating back to its first recorded mention as Zuarina in 1018, Schwerin is recognized as the oldest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, having received its town charter from Henry the Lion in 1160. It served for centuries as the principal residence for the rulers of the House of Mecklenburg, a royal line with Slavic Obotrite origins. Following various territorial divisions and political shifts through the centuries, including a period as a district capital during the East German era, Schwerin was restored as the state capital following German reunification in 1990.

The central highlight of the city is Schwerin Palace, situated on an island between Lake Schwerin and Castle Lake. Recognizable by its golden dome, this grand residence previously housed the region's dukes and grand dukes and now accommodates the state parliament. The complex features a throne room, the Castle Church, and notable artwork such as the Niklot statue. Because the city suffered minimal damage during World War II, historic architecture remains widely preserved throughout the central districts, notably in the Altstadt and Schelfstadt quarters.

Beyond the palace island, the skyline is marked by the soaring towers of Schwerin Cathedral, built in the Brick Gothic style between 1260 and 1416, alongside St. Paul's Church and St. Nicholas' Church. Adjacent to the castle, the Alter Garten plaza is encircled by significant historic structures, including the 18th-century Altes Palais, the 18th-century city hall, and the Staatstheater. Visitors can also explore the Staatliches Museum Schwerin, which exhibits prominent collections of 17th-century Dutch paintings, French artwork, and classic German prints and drawings.

Schwerin experiences a moderate oceanic climate with summer temperatures averaging around 18 °C and winter averages near 1 °C. Travelers can access the area via Schwerin Hauptbahnhof, which offers direct rail links to major urban centers including Berlin, Hamburg, and Rostock. Local public transport within the city relies on a network of buses and trams, while air connections are primarily routed through Hamburg Airport to the west.
