Why Singen
Situated in the far south of Baden-Württemberg, Singen is an industrial city positioned near Lake Constance and just north of the German-Swiss border. It serves as the primary urban center of the surrounding Hegau region.
The most prominent landmark defining the town's landscape is the Hohentwiel, a volcanic stub rising above the area. Atop this natural feature lie the ruins of a historic fortress, which was destroyed by French military forces during the Napoleonic Wars.
Human settlement in the vicinity dates back several millennia. In the 1950s, a large early Bronze Age burial ground dating from approximately 2300 BC to 2000 BC was discovered, giving its name to the Singen group. Evidence of Roman activity includes ancient coins and a villa identified in the suburb of Bohlingen. First recorded in documents as Sisinga in 787, the village passed through various noble families before long periods of Austrian ownership, eventually transferring to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1810. The opening of the train station in 1863 and the arrival of a Maggi establishment in 1887 triggered rapid expansion, leading to official city rights in 1899.
Events from the 20th century are visible across the city. Local events from the 1930s are documented along a dedicated history trail created in 1989. During World War II, the region became notable for the Singen route, an escape path into the Swiss Ramsen salient used by Allied officers fleeing prisoner-of-war camps. Between 1991 and 1995, the town also featured a temporary street circuit that hosted motor racing competitions.
Singen is well connected by transportation networks. Singen (Hohentwiel) station operates as a key regional rail hub, offering direct services on the Gäu Railway and High Rhine Railway to destinations including Stuttgart, Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, and the Swiss towns of Schaffhausen and Basel. The area is also served by two additional stations on the Seehas regional line and a heritage railway running to Etzwilen. For international travel, Friedrichshafen Airport is located 69 kilometers away, while Zurich Airport lies 74 kilometers to the south.
