Why Springe

Springe is a German town situated in Lower Saxony within the Region of Hanover, located approximately 22 kilometers southwest of the city of Hanover. Positioned near the Deister hills and the Small Deister, the locale sits at the Deister Gate, a natural transition zone between mountainous terrain and prairie landscapes. This strategic geography places Springe along a historic travel corridor between Hanover and Hamelin. The town's coat of arms reflects its local geography, depicting the three sources of the nearby Haller River alongside symbolic roses associated with its historic rulers.

The settlement's recorded history dates back to the tenth and eleventh centuries, when it was initially noted under names such as Helereisprig and Hallerspringe. In 1282, the Counts of Hallermund established a fortified structure in the area following the loss of their previous stronghold on the Kleiner Deister. This new seat of power fostered local development and led to the granting of municipal rights during the thirteenth century. Over the following centuries, Springe grew into a regional administrative center. Infrastructure expanded with the construction of a major causeway in the eighteenth century and the arrival of the Hanover to Altenbeken railway line in 1872.

Visitors to Springe can explore various local attractions and outdoor features. A key point of interest is the Wisentgehege, a bison nature preserve located within the area. Cultural history is presented at the Burghof Museum, while municipal public recreational amenities include an indoor swimming pool alongside outdoor pools in surrounding communities such as Eldagsen, Bennigsen, and Altenhagen I. The town also supports various physical activities, featuring local sports clubs, tennis courts, mini golf courses, bowling lanes, beach volleyball courts, and skating spots.

Springe is accessible via the Bundesstraße 217 highway and public transportation networks. Springe railway station sits along the Hanover to Altenbeken line and is served by Hanover S-Bahn Line 5, providing direct rail connections to Hanover Central Station, Hanover Airport, Hamelin, and Paderborn. Additional local transit is supplied by regional bus services. Internationally and regionally, Springe maintains municipal partnerships with Niort in France and Waren in Germany, as well as friendly relations with Milicz in Poland.
