Why Stade

The Hanseatic City of Stade is a historic town situated in Lower Saxony in northern Germany. Positioned roughly 45 kilometers west of Hamburg, Stade serves as the seat of its namesake district within the broader Hamburg metropolitan region. The municipality encompasses the urban districts of Bützfleth, Hagen, Haddorf, and Wiepenkathen, each governed by its own local council.

Located along the lower stretches of the river Elbe, Stade is also featured on the German Timber-Frame Road route. Human activity in the area dates back tens of thousands of years, with the city first formally documented in historical records in 934. Over the centuries, Stade experienced rule under Danish forces, the Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen, and Swedish authority. During its Swedish era from 1645 to 1712, Stade served as a provincial capital, leaving behind several structures that remain in active use today.

From the 13th century through the late 17th century, Stade stood as a prominent member of the Hanseatic League. Following a major municipal fire in 1659 that destroyed two-thirds of the town, Stade was reconstructed according to its original street plan. The town was ultimately left completely undamaged by bombings during World War II, preserving its historic urban layout.

Visitors exploring the Old Town can admire a rich selection of historical architecture. Primary landmarks include the St. Cosmae et Damiani Lutheran Church, the Wilhadi Lutheran Church, the historic city hall, the Schwedenspeicher, and the Zeughaus. Near the city along the river, travelers can view the gigantic pylons of Elbe Crossing 1 and Elbe Crossing 2, the latter of which features the tallest power pylons in Europe.

Stade is easily accessible by public transportation. The S3 line of the Hamburg S-Bahn connects Stade station directly to Hamburg central station, with regular train services taking approximately one hour. Beyond its historic appeal, the city is an established industrial hub along the Elbe, well known for its chemical production and aerospace manufacturing.
