Why Tönisvorst

Tönisvorst is a German town located in the Viersen district of North Rhine-Westphalia, positioned roughly five kilometers west of Krefeld. Situated along the Lower Rhine region, the community is widely recognized for its extensive apple orchards and agriculture. Because of this agricultural prominent feature, it carries the official designation of Apfelstadt am Niederrhein, or Apple Town on the Lower Rhine.

Historically, the area developed distinct local landmarks spread across its settlements, particularly around the districts of St. Tönis and Vorst. Architectural points of interest in St. Tönis include the historic old town hall, known as Das alte Rathaus, alongside the traditional property Der Mertenshof. St. Tönis is also associated with the Schluff, a historic steam locomotive. The Vorst area features several notable historic manors and estates, including Haus Raedt, Haus Brempt, Haus Neersdonk, and Haus Donk, while Der Gelleshof forms another prominent historic structure within the municipality.

Tönisvorst maintains international connections through formal sister-city partnerships with three European communities: Laakdal in Belgium, Sées in France, and Staré Město in the Czech Republic.

The region experiences temperate weather typical of western Germany, though it can see extreme summer heat. On July 25, 2019, local weather equipment registered a temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius (106.2 degrees Fahrenheit), tying with Duisburg-Baerl for the sixth highest temperature ever documented in the country.
