Why Werne

Werne is a historic town in the Unna district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Positioned along the southern edge of the Münsterland region near the industrial Ruhrgebiet, it sits along the Lippe river. With a population of around 30,000 residents, the municipality also encompasses the incorporated ward of Stockum.

The town traces its origins back to 834, when a village began forming around a chapel established by Liudger, the first Bishop of Münster, under the direction of Charlemagne following the Saxon Wars. Werne developed into a regional market hub, forming a trade alliance with neighboring cities in 1253 and joining the Hanseatic League in 1470. Over the centuries, the settlement endured fires, wars, and outbreaks of plague. Industrial developments shaped its later history: thermal brine springs were uncovered during coal searches in the 1870s, leading to the creation of local baths, and a coal mine operated from 1899 until 1975. Today, the former mine facilities have been repurposed into community meeting spaces and a business park.

Visitors to Werne will find several historical and cultural landmarks. The historic center features a town hall originally constructed between 1512 and 1561, complemented by a newer town hall completed in the 1970s. Cultural institutions include the Karl Pollender City Museum, housed alongside the city archives, and a public library situated in the historic Old Moormann Stone House. Performance spaces such as the Freilichtbühne Werne open-air theater and the Kolpinghaus host local cultural events.

For outdoor recreation and wellness, the town park features a city lake accompanied by a graduation tower. The town's thermal heritage remains active through its modern natural brine bath, which opened in 2019 to replace the original bath complex built in the late 19th century. Extensive urban updates completed in the 1980s created a central pedestrian zone, making the downtown area easily accessible on foot.

Werne is linked to the regional rail network via the Münster-Werne-Dortmund line, which serves the town's refurbished railway station. Local transit and regional travel connect Werne closely with nearby centers like Münster and Dortmund.
