Located in Malé on the Kaafu Atoll, the Islamic Centre—officially known as Masjid as-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam—is an iconic Sunni Islam architectural landmark in the Maldives. Officially opened in November 1984 by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, this impressive structure features a Modernist design inspired by a mosque in Malaysia while blending traditional Islamic architectural elements. As you approach from the main jetty, you will easily spot its towering 41-meter (133-foot) minaret and gleaming golden dome dominating the city skyline.

Inside, you can admire intricate woodcarvings and elegant Arabic calligraphy adorning the interior walls. The complex houses the Grand Friday Mosque, named after the famed hero Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam, which can accommodate roughly 5,000 worshippers. Additionally, a commemorative plate in the grand entrance lists in Dhivehi, Arabic, and English the supportive leaders from countries like Saudi Arabia, Brunei, Pakistan, Malaysia, and the UAE who helped finance its construction.

Serving as a cultural and administrative hub, the centre also contains an Islamic library, a conference hall for official ceremonies, and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, making it a must-see destination to appreciate Maldivian heritage and civic life.
