Stroganov Church

When you visit Nizhny Novgorod, you cannot miss the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, popularly known as the Stroganov Church. Located right on Rozhdestvenskaya Street, this active Russian Orthodox temple stands as a remarkable monument of Stroganov Baroque architecture. Funded by the wealthy merchant Grigory Stroganov and constructed between 1696 and 1719, the building tells a dramatic story of survival.

You will admire an intricate structure that endured multiple devastating fires, a forced shutdown by Peter the Great, and an 1880s belltower tilt that required its upper tiers to be completely rebuilt. Thanks to rector Sergius Veisov, who presented historic evidence to save it during the Soviet era, you can explore it fully preserved today. Inside and out, you will see breathtaking white stone carvings adorn its two-level layout.

As you wander through the upper level, you can observe the prayer hall, refectory, porch, and three-apsidal altar. Look closely at the octagon-on-cube belltower, where a unique dome features a cross with a weather vane alongside historic stone slabs carved with Old Russian time calculations.
