When you visit the historic centre of Nizhny Novgorod, you will find the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky standing proudly on National Unity Square. Set directly under the walls of the Kremlin and near the Church of St. John the Baptist, this impressive structure is a slightly smaller copy of the famous monument on Moscow's Red Square, created by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli and unveiled on November 4, 2005.
Stepping onto this square brings you to the exact spot where Russia's history shifted in 1611. During the Time of Troubles, zemstvo elder Kuzma Minin appealed to the people from this location to form a militia, raise funds, and liberate Moscow from Polish occupiers. Joined by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, who commanded the forces, their efforts led to the liberation of Moscow in 1612.
Though an 1803 monument design by Ivan Martos was originally intended for Nizhny Novgorod, it was moved to Moscow in 1818, leaving this city with an obelisk inside the Kremlin until this replica was installed. As you admire the bronze figures, notice that the statues stand five centimeters shorter than the Moscow original and feature a unique pedestal inscription.
