Why Edmonton

Edmonton serves as the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta and stands as the northernmost urban center in North America with a population exceeding one million residents. Situated along the North Saskatchewan River roughly 290 kilometers north of Calgary, the municipality anchors the northern end of the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor. Known as the Gateway to the North, it acts as a primary staging point for northern resource operations, including oil sands development in northern Alberta and diamond mining in the Northwest Territories.

The local river valley supported Indigenous communities for thousands of years, serving as a traditional home for various First Nations and later the Métis. European presence grew through the fur trade, leading to the construction of Fort Edmonton by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1795. The post was relocated upstream to the current central river area by 1813. The arrival of regional railways in the late nineteenth century attracted new residents and agricultural trade, leading to Edmonton's incorporation as a town in 1892, its official charter as a city in 1904, and its selection as Alberta's capital in 1905.

Geographically, Edmonton rests on flat to gently rolling terrain at an elevation of 671 meters, surrounded by aspen parkland that marks a transition between southern prairies and northern boreal forest. The Canadian Rockies are located approximately 220 kilometers to the southwest. The North Saskatchewan River bisects the city and is fed by local tributaries such as Mill Creek, Whitemud Creek, and Blackmud Creek, whose forested ravines form extensive networks of urban parkland.

As a major cultural hub nicknamed Canada's Festival City, Edmonton hosts community and arts events throughout the year. Prominent attractions include West Edmonton Mall, which holds the status of Canada's largest shopping center, and Fort Edmonton Park, the country's largest living history museum. Visitors can also explore historic areas such as Strathcona on the south side of the river, which developed around an early railway terminus before amalgamating with Edmonton in 1912.

The region features a humid continental climate defined by cold, dry winters from November through March and warm, sunny summers from June into early September. Spring and autumn are typically brief, and weather conditions can experience notable swings at any time of year.
