Saint John the Baptist Church, widely recognized as Kanach Zham or the "Green Chapel" due to its former green domes, is an Armenian Apostolic historic site situated uphill from the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral in Shusha (Nagorno-Karabakh region, Azerbaijan). Alternatively named Gharabakhtsots after an earlier wooden church built by local farmers, the stone structure was constructed in 1818. When visiting the site's history, you will learn of its unique cruciform layout, designed so the eastern facade sits adjacent to the western part of its chapel, allowing its tall dome and chapel to stand out prominently across the town.
Look for details of its distinct interior architectural features and an inscription above the entrance dating to 1847, dedicated by Babayan Stepanos Hovhannes to his deceased brother Mkrtych. However, travelers should note the complex contemporary situation of Kanach Zham. Following severe damage reported after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war—including destroyed towers and disputed Azerbaijani claims of ongoing renovations—satellite imagery verified by Caucasus Heritage Watch confirmed the church was fully demolished between December 2023 and April 2024.
