Welcome to the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Govhar Agha, a historic Shia Islam site standing prominently on Yusif Vazir Chamanzaminli street in Shusha's main square, Azerbaijan. Known as "The Upper Govhar Agha Mosque" due to its position in the upper section of town, this building is celebrated as a masterpiece of Eastern architecture and a symbol of Shusha.
Initiated by Ibrahim Khalil Khan in 1768/1769 and completed between 1883–1885 by architect Karbalayi Safikhan Karabakhi under the direction of Govhar Agha, it forms part of a broader architectural complex featuring a madrasa, shops, and houses. Inside, you will see a square, three-nave stone prayer hall split by six stone columns and lit by dual windows, along with balconies historically used for women's premises.
Outside, admire the rectangular three-beam veranda and two cylindrical brick minarets decorated with horizontal belts and distinctive brick patterns typical of Karabakh mosque architecture. Over time, the venue served as a museum, faced closures during conflicts, undergo various restoration projects, and was reopened for tourism and prayers, making it a compelling visit.
