If you are exploring the historical treasures of Azerbaijan, you will find the Mamayi Mosque (Mamay Məscidi) located in Shusha, situated approximately 350 kilometres (220 miles) away from the capital city of Baku. As an authentic Shia Islam place of worship, this notable site sits directly on G. Asgarov street within the historic Mamayi neighborhood.
Notably, the Mamayi neighborhood stands as the fourth of eight upper and earlier historic quarters established in Shusha. When you visit, you are stepping into a vital piece of local heritage; by the end of the 19th century, this structure was proudly one of the 17 functioning mosques serving the community of Shusha. Today, the mosque is positioned within the protected boundaries of the Shusha State Historical and Architectural Reserve.
A few years prior to the occupation of Shusha, the Mamayi Mosque underwent extensive renovations alongside the Ashaghi Govhar Agha, Yukhari Govhar Agha, and Saatli mosques. Satellite reporting conducted by Cornell University's Caucasus Heritage Watch revealed that during the period of de facto Armenian control, the building remained unchanged and well-preserved up until 2020. The mosque was subsequently returned to Azerbaijani control following the three-day battle over Shusha in 2020.
