Why Hamburg

Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany and a sovereign city-state located at the southern base of the Jutland Peninsula. Situated along the River Elbe where it meets the Alster and Bille rivers, the city is bounded by Schleswig-Holstein to the north and Lower Saxony to the south. Its urban center surrounds the Binnenalster and Außenalster, two central lakes created by damming the Alster. As home to Germany's largest port—and the third-largest in Europe—Hamburg stands as a critical maritime and commercial hub, while its official territory even extends to remote islands within the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park.

The city’s origin dates to 808 CE, when Emperor Charlemagne commissioned a defensive fortress known as Hammaburg. Established as a bishopric in 834 CE, Hamburg developed into a powerful Northern European trade center. It was designated a Free Imperial City in 1189, granting its merchants tax-free passage along the Lower Elbe, and later co-founded the Hanseatic League with Lübeck in 1241. Over the centuries, Hamburg survived repeated destruction, including devastating medieval raids, the Great Fire of 1842, severe wartime bombing during World War II, and a major North Sea flood in 1962.

With approximately 2,500 bridges traversing its extensive network of waterways, Hamburg possesses more bridges than any other European city. Its architectural landscape blends historical and contemporary design. The Speicherstadt warehouse district and the adjacent Kontorhausviertel were recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2015. Additionally, the cityscape features five of the world's tallest churches with spires exceeding 100 meters, alongside prominent modern cultural venues such as the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle concert halls.

Hamburg is an influential center for research, media, and international commerce. It houses major educational institutions like the University of Hamburg and the DESY research facility, as well as the world's oldest merchant bank and Germany's oldest stock exchange. Culturally, the city offers a diverse theatrical landscape, a notable musical heritage that paved the way for bands like the Beatles, and the well-known Reeperbahn district in St. Pauli. Positioned in northern Germany, Hamburg experiences an oceanic climate shaped by coastal influences from the Atlantic Ocean.
